Differential recovery of Pacific Island fish remains

چکیده

The effects of differential recovery have been documented and discussed for almost a century. Screening experiments using comparative collections are one avenue for understanding recovery bias because they develop expectations about what is likely to be recovered. In this study, modern reference specimens of Pacific Island fish were screened through 1/4 inch (6.4 mm) and 1/8 inch (3.2 mm) mesh. Recovery rates are examined across taxa, body size, and element type. The experimental recovery rates are then compared to those from an archaeological fish assemblage from the Moturakau rockshelter, Aitutaki, Cook Islands, to examine how well the data derived from screening experiments are able to predict archaeological recovery patterns. The experimental data is able to accurately predict the taxa recovered in the Moturakau sample. The impact of differential recovery on a variety of interpretations utilizing archaeological fish remains is then discussed. 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Fish, food security and health in Pacific Island countries and territories: a systematic literature review

BACKGROUND Pacific Island countries and territories (PICTs) face a double burden of disease, with a high prevalence of household food insecurity and childhood micronutrient deficiencies, accompanied by a burgeoning increase in adult obesity, diabetes and heart disease. METHODS A systematic literature review was undertaken to assess whether increased availability of, and access to, fish improv...

Island biogeography of Caribbean coral reef fish

Aim The goal of our study was to test fundamental predictions of biogeographical theories in tropical reef fish assemblages, in particular relationships between fish species richness and island area, isolation and oceanographic variables (temperature and productivity) in the insular Caribbean. These analyses complement an analogous and more voluminous body of work from the tropical Indo-Pacific...

Amphidromy Links a Newly Documented Fish Community of Continental Australian Streams, to Oceanic Islands of the West Pacific

BACKGROUND Indo-Pacific high island streams experience extreme hydrological variation, and are characterised by freshwater fish species with an amphidromous life history. Amphidromy is a likely adaptation for colonisation of island streams following stochastic events that lead to local extirpation. In the Wet Tropics of north-eastern Australia, steep coastal mountain streams share similar physi...

Fish Names of Wallis Island (uvea)

Fish names are not only of interest to the ichthyologist. Linguists too have been studying fish name as they are generally regarded as a more stable subsection of the lexicon, which is less subject to change and more reliable as a source for historical reconstruction. However in the Pacific, especially in Polynesia with its history of migration, linguists have to be careful when using fish name...

The Journal of Island and Coastal Archaeology

We present the results of the analysis of fish remains from an archaeological context (Punta Ñagué) associated with the earliest settlers in the semiarid northern coast of Chile and dated to the end of the Pleistocene (12,916–11,043 cal yr BP). The great majority of the species identified are fish that can be captured with nets in the nearshore subtidal and inter-tidal zones. These results, alo...
